Before Sharpsburg
He mustered as Private, Company F, 4th Virginia Infantry on 24 April 1861. He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant on 5 August 1861 and Captain on 24 April 1862.
On the Campaign
He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was originally buried "in H. Reel's field west of his orchard along a stone wall" on the battlefield at Sharpsburg. Probably reinterred at Hagerstown in about 1874.
