He enlisted in Charleston on 9 May and mustered as 2nd Corporal, Company I, 2nd South Carolina Infantry, on 22 May 1861. He was appointed 2nd Sergeant after 17 January 1862.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

Originally buried on the field at Sharpsburg near "Mrs. Lucker's" [Locker] barn. Probably reinterred at Hagerstown in about 1874.

Burial information from Pruett,1 who has him as Sgt J.S. Boyd, company not given. Service details from Salley.2 His memorial is on FIndagrave, which has him in First Scots Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Charleston, SC.
