Age 22, he mustered as Private, Company F, 3rd Virginia Cavalry at New Kent Court House, VA. He was promoted to Sergeant on 15 November 1861 and commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in May 1862.

He was killed in action at Boonsboro, MD on 15 September 1862.
The rest of the War
Originally buried "at the Disciple church in Boonsboro [Maryland]". Probably reinterred at Hagerstown in about 1874.
