He was mortally wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September.

The rest of the War

He died at Sharpsburg of wounds on 19 September 1862. He was originally buried "In the hollow west of Israel Smith's barn" on the battlefield at Sharpsburg and probably reinterred at Hagerstown in about 1874.
