He was mortally wounded by gunshot and captured in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He died at a US Army hospital in Frederick, MD on 17 October 1862. He was originally buried "on west side of and in the cemetery [Mt Olivet?] at Frederick." Probably reinterred at Hagerstown in about 1874.
