Age 23 (or 25), he enlisted as Private, Company H, 13th Mississippi Infantry at Sparta on 26 April 1861.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He died of wounds at a field hospital on the Grove Farm at Sharpsburg on 8 (or 11) October 1862. He was originally buried at "the northern edge of Stephen Grove's woods". And was probably reinterred at Hagerstown in about 1874.
