Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 22 year old farmer in Coweta County, GA. He enlisted as a Private in Company D, 53rd Georgia Infantry on 6 May 1862 in Coweta County.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded and captured in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September.

The rest of the War

He died on the Lavinia Grove Farm near Sharpsburg, MD and was "buried in Mrs. Lucker’s barn field near an old well; have been plowed over", date not given.

After the War

He was probably reinterred in the Washington Confederate Cemetery in Hagerstown in about 1874.

Burial information from Pruett1, who lists him as John C. Hagens. His service from the Roster,2 which says he was killed in action on 17 September, and his Compiled Service Records, US National Archives, online via fold3. Personal details from family genealogists and the US Census of 1860.

He married Sarah Elizabeth Carmichael (1840-1925) in March 1858 in Coweta County and they had 3 children, but all 3 died as children.
