He enlisted as Private, Company C, 22nd South Carolina Infantry about 15 January 1862. He was appointed Sergeant, date not given.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded in action at Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862, and captured.

The rest of the War

He died in Frederick, MD and was originally buried "on west side of and in the cemetery at Frederick" and was probably reinterred at Hagerstown in about 1874.

Burial information from Pruett1. His service from the Roll,1 as W.P. Hamly. He may still be at Mt. Olivet and has stones there (via Findagrave); his modern stone has him in the 27th SC Infantry.
