In 1860, he was an 18 year old farmer on his father's place in Warnerville, Meriwether County. He enlisted in the 8th Georgian Infantry, Company and date not given.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was originally buried "in Capt. David Smith's Orchard northeast corner" on the battlefield at Sharpsburg and probably reinterred at Hagerstown in about 1874.

His brother Benjamin George Washington Kempson (1846-1914) served in Company D in 1864-65. His brother Henry Jacob Kempson (b.1829) was in the 28th Georgia Infantry and was killed at Bentonville, NC in March 1865.
