He was mortally wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He died of wounds on 26 September 1862. Originally buried "in Samuel Beeler's barn field along the fence, running east from the barn" near the battlefield at Sharpsburg. Probably reinterred at Hagerstown in about 1874.
