He was killed in action, shot in the abdomen at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

Originally buried "in Benj. Grave's [Grove] young orchard on left hand side of road to Shepherdstown" near the battlefield at Sharpsburg. Probably reinterred at Hagerstown in about 1874.
