He was mortally wounded and captured in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He died of wounds, date unknown. Originally buried "in Mrs. Lucker's [Locker] barn field near an old well" on the battlefield at Sharpsburg. Probably reinterred at Hagerstown in about 1874.
