Before Sharpsburg
From Person County, he was conscripted and enlisted in July 1862 as a Private in Company G, 15th North Carolina Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was mortally wounded and captured in action at Crampton’s Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was paroled by 26 September but died of wounds on 4 October 1862 in a US field hospital at Burkittsville, MD. He was originally buried "close along the fence on west side of woods back of graveyard in Burkettsville [Burkittsville]."
After the War
He was probably reinterred at Hagerstown in about 1874.
