He was mortally wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862, and died the same day.

The rest of the War

Originally buried "in Samuel Beeler's barn field along the fence, running east from the barn" near the battlefield at Sharpsburg. Probably reinterred at Hagerstown in about 1874.
