He was probably mortally wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September.
The rest of the War
He died of wounds on 25 September 1862, probably at a Federal field hospital near the battlefield. He was originally buried "below Mayer's barn" near the battlefield at Sharpsburg. Probably reinterred at Hagerstown in about 1874.
