He mustered as Private, Company I, 23rd Virginia Infantry in Prince Edward County on 13 March 1862. He was promoted to 2nd Sergeant on 21 April 1862.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded and captured in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He died at a hospital on the Groves Farm near Sharpsburg on 20 September 1862. He was originally buried "In Benj. Grave's [Grove's?] old orchard", near the battlefield at Sharpsburg. Probably reinterred at Hagerstown in about 1874.
