Before Sharpsburg
Son of a lawyer and raised in Alabama, he went to Suwannee County, FL with his family in 1854. By 1860 his father was a humble laborer there. At age 27 James enlisted at Houston in Suwannee County on 14 May 1862 and mustered there the next day as a Private in Company C, 8th Florida Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was mortally wounded by a gunshot, with fracture, in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862, and was captured there.
The rest of the War
He was admitted to a US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD on 22 October but died there on 13 (or 14) November 1862. He was originally buried in Mt Olivet Cemetery in Frederick, MD.
After the War
He may have been reinterred in the Washington Confederate Cemetery at Rose Hill in Hagerstown, MD about 1874.
