A 25 year old resident of New York City, he enrolled on 3 May 1861 in the 20th New York Infantry, and mustered in as 2nd Lieutenant, Company G on 6 May. He was promoted to First Lieutenant of Company D on 1 May 1862.

On the Campaign

He was killed by a gunshot in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
