Before Sharpsburg
A 32 year old lawyer, he enlisted at Harpers Ferry, VA on 26 May 1861. He was enrolled as a Private in Company H, 11th Mississippi Infantry. In the reorganization of 21 April 1862 he was elected 2nd Lieutenant and immediately afterward, Major of the regiment. He was wounded at Gaines' Mill, VA in June.
On the Campaign
Colonel Liddell was mortally wounded in the initial skirmishing contact with Federal First Corps troops at Sharpsburg late on 16 September 1862 and on the morning of the 17th Lieutenant-Colonel Butler was likewise wounded. Evans took command as next senior officer, but was killed in action there.
