Before Sharpsburg
A lawyer before the war, he was commissioned Captain, Company H, 11th Mississippi Infantry on 1 May 1861 and was elected Major in the reorganization in April 1862. He was wounded at Gaines' Mill, VA in June.
On the Campaign
Colonel Liddell was mortally wounded in the initial skirmishing contact with the Federal I Corps late on 16 September. On the 17th, Lieutenant-Colonel Butler was wounded and his relief Major Evans was killed while in command of the regiment.
