Colonel

William H. Taylor

(1816 - 1897)

Home State: Mississippi

Command Billet: Commanding Regiment

Branch of Service: Infantry

Unit: 12th Mississippi Infantry

Before Sharpsburg

He moved to Jackson, MS in 1838 and had service in the Mexican War (1847-48). He was commissioned Captain of the Raymond Fencibles - Company A, 12th Mississippi Infantry on 13 April 1861 in Raymond, MS. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on 16 May 1861 and was elected Colonel on 28 April 1862 at the Army reorganization.

On the Campaign

He commanded the regiment in Maryland.

The rest of the War

He was on leave (or absent without leave) for much of 1863, and requested an extension in October to take his seat as member of the Mississippi State Legislature in Columbus, MS. His leave was again extended on 11 December 1863, and he applied on the 13th to President Jefferson Davis for appointment to Brigadier General and command of Posey's Brigade, apparently without success. In February 1864 General D.H. Hill requested he be dropped from the rolls for being absent without authority. It was forwarded approved by General R.E. Lee, and the Secretary of War dropped him on 19 March 1864.

After the War

He lived in Jackson, where he served several terms as Mayor, and was Sheriff of Hinds County.
