Before Antietam

Age 19, a painter from Northbridge, he enlisted in July 1861 as a Private in Company H, 15th Massachusetts Infantry. He was promoted to Corporal on 9 August 1861 and was wounded by a gunshot to the face at Balls Bluff, VA on 21 October 1861. He was promoted again, to Sergeant on 1 May 1862.

On the Campaign

He was appointed First Sergeant of his Company on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant on 22 January 1863 and was wounded in the left side and arm in action at Gettysburg on 2 July 1863, promoted to First Lieutenant on 4 July. He was appointed Adjutant of the Regiment on 3 December 1863 and promoted again, to Captain on 6 February 1864, but not mustered at that rank. He was wounded again, at Spotsylvania Court House, VA on 12 May 1864 and mustered out on 29 July 1864.

After the War

By 1870 and to at least 1880 he was lived in Whitinsville, Northbridge, Worcester County, MA, but he was in Providence, RI by 1885. He was a partner in the Stanton and Farnham monument and granite works.

He married Mary Jane Graham (1848-1916) in June 1866 in Northbridge, MA; they separated in 1889. He married again, Ella E Evans (1857-1943) in Providence in April 1892 and they had a son Ralph Evans Stanton (1896-1981).
