Before Antietam

He emigrated from Germany to New York City with his wife and children on 6 Jun 1853. In May 1861 at age 44, then a mason in Webster, MA, he enlisted as a Private in Company I, 15th Massachusetts Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded in the leg in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He died of wounds on 30 September 1862 in the "Sedgewick" hospital at "Keitsville" (Keedysville), MD.
