William H. Ham

A shoemaker's son, in 1860 he was a 16 year old laborer living with his parents and 4 siblings at Snow Hill in Greene County, NC; there were at least 5 other Ham households nearby, including that of farmer Benjamin/son James. Giving his age as 21, he enlisted in Snow Hill on 27 April 1861 and mustered the same day as a Private in Company A, 3rd North Carolina Infantry. He was wounded on 1 July 1862 at Malvern Hill, VA.

He was wounded again, by a gunshot in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

He was admitted to a hospital in Richmond on 30 September, transferred to a hospital in Danville, VA on on 15 December, and returned to duty on 17 January 1863. He was wounded for the third time, at Chancellorsville, VA on 3 May 1863, and was afterward home on furlough "unfit for duty" to about October 1863. He was wounded yet again, in the hand, on 27 or 28 November 1863 at Mine Run, VA. He was captured at Spotsylvania Court House, VA on 12 May 1864 and a prisoner at Point Lookout, MD to 10 August, when he was transferred to the prison at Elmira, NY. He took an oath of allegiance to the United States there and was released on 14 June 1865.

By 1880 and to at least 1900 he was a farmer at Snow Hill, NC.

He married Mariah Wells (1844-1933) and they had 7 children between 1867 and 1881.
