Before Sharpsburg

A 23 year old from Greene County, he enlisted as Private, Company A, 3rd North Carolina Infantry on 23 April 1861. He was promoted to Corporal on 28 February 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in the left side of his face and neck in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.

The rest of the War

He was promoted to Sergeant on 1 October 1862. He was transferred to Company C, 1st North Carolina Battalion on 6 January 1863, but discharged on the 18th of the month to accept a commission as 2nd Lieutenant, Company C, 67th North Carolina Infantry (to date from the 6th). He was promoted to Captain one year later on 18 January 1864.

After the War

He was living in Florida by 1898.
