Before Antietam
He was a lawyer before the war. In May 1861 he was commissioned Captain in the 3rd Connecticut Infantry and fought at First Bull Run, VA in July. In October 1861 he was appointed Colonel of the 8th Connecticut and was on General Burnside's North Carolina expedition.
On the Campaign
He commanded the 2nd Brigade in the Third Division/Ninth Corps in Maryland and assumed command of the Division after General Rodman was wounded on the afternoon of 17 September 1862 at Antietam.
The rest of the War
He continued in command of the Brigade at Fredericksburg and in November 1862 was appointed Brigadier General of Volunteers commanding districts in North Carolina.
After the War
He continued his law practice and was later a politician, judge, and bank president.
