From Moore County, he was conscripted and enrolled in Company C, 3rd North Carolina Infantry on 20 June 1862.
On the Campaign
He was wounded by a gunshot to his left leg and captured in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.

He was exchanged in February 1863.
