"The Virginia Military Institute opened its doors to cadets on November 11, 1839 and John Strange was one of the small group who enrolled that first day. Following his graduation on July 4, 1842, he pursued a career in education, serving as a teacher, as Principal of Norfolk (VA) Academy, and as Superintendent of the Albemarle (VA) Military Academy".
He was commissioned Lieutenant Colonel of the 19th Virginia Infantry on 2 May 1861, and promoted to Colonel on 29 April 1862.
On the Campaign
He was killed in command of his regiment in combat on South Mountain, September 14th.
