An 18 year old farmer in Onslow County, he enlisted there on 2 July 1861 as Private, Company E, 3rd North Carolina Infantry. He was absent, sick, from 30 November 1861 to 15 July 1862.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
