Before Sharpsburg

Age 33, he was conscripted in Raleigh, NC on 15 July 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company E, 3rd North Carolina Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862 and "sent to the rear."

The rest of the War

He was in a Richmond, VA hospital by 7 October and furloughed for 300 days on October 9, but never returned to his company and was eventually listed as a deserter to date from 1 February 1863.
