Age 22, from New Hanover County, he enlisted there on 6 June 1861 as Private, Company H, 3rd North Carolina Infantry. He was promoted to Corporal about 15 August 1862.

He was mortally wounded in action on 17 September 1862.

He died of his wounds at Mount Jackson, VA on 24 September 1862.
