Before Sharpsburg
Son of a blacksmith, in 1860 he was a 17 year old hireling (laborer) living with his parents and 4 siblings at Newmarket in Randolph County, NC. He was conscripted in Raleigh, NC on 17 July 1862 and mustered as a Private in Company H, 3rd North Carolina Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was mortally wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was sent to a CS hospital in Winchester, VA, but died there of wounds on 1 (or 7) October 1862.

His brother William was also wounded at Sharpsburg, but survived the battle. He probably did not survive the war.
