From Beaufort, age 20, he enlisted as a Private, Company I, 3rd North Carolina Infantry on 10 May 1861. He was promoted to Corporal about 14 July 1862.

He was mortally wounded in action on 17 September 1862.

He died of his wounds on 16 October 1862 in Richmond, VA.
