Age 20, from New Hanover County, he enlisted there on 1 June 1861 as Private, Company K, 3rd North Carolina Infantry. He was promoted to Corporal on about 30 November.

He was killed in action at Sharpsburg while carrying the regimental colors on 17 September 1862.
