He enlisted at age 23 in Charlotte in Company A, 6th North Carolina Infantry on 28 May 1862. He was wounded in action near Richmond, VA on 1 July 1862.

He was captured in action on 14 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was confined at Fort Delaware until exchanged on 10 November 1862. He was listed as a deserter after exchange.
