He enlisted at age 17 in Company A, 6th North Carolina Infantry on 14 June 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action on 14 September 1862 on South Mountain.

The rest of the War

He was captured in action at Rappahanock Station, VA in NOvember 1863 and held at Point Lookout, MD until taking the Oath of Allegiance and joining the US service on 24 January 1864.
