Before Sharpsburg

A farmer, he enlisted at age 25 in Orange County, NC in Company C, 6th North Carolina Infantry on 1 May 1861. He mustered in as a Corporal, but was reduced to Private by April 1862. He was wounded in action and captured at Seven Pines, VA on 31 May 1862. He was held at Fort Delaware until paroled, then exchanged 5 August 1862 at Aiken’s Landing, VA.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.

The rest of the War

He was discharged at Staunton, VA on 13 February 1863 for "gunshot wound both hips".
