He enlisted at age 21 in Orange County, NC in Company C, 6th North Carolina Infantry on 1 May 1861. He was wounded in action at Gaines Mill, VA on 27 June 1862.

He was wounded and captured in action on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was held at Ft. McHenry, MD until paroled, then exchanged 10 November 1862 at Aiken's Landing, VA. He was reported as deserting on 8 November 1864 near Newtown, VA.
