From Orange County, he enlisted at age 34 in Company C, 6th North Carolina Infantry on 1 May 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.

The rest of the War

He was captured in action at Falling Waters, MD on 14 July 1863 and confined at the Old Capital Prison in Washington, DC. He took the Oath of Allegiance in March 1864.
