He enlisted at age 17 (19?) in Alamance County, NC in Company D, 6th North Carolina Infantry on 15 June 1861. He was appointed Corporal between May and October 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.

The rest of the War

He was again wounded, in action at Chancellorsville, VA on 4 May 1863. He was captured in action at Rappahannock Station, VA on 7 November 1863 and held at Point Lookout, MD until paroled at Boulware's Wharf, James River, VA on 16 March 1865.
