A Burke County farmer, most often known as Leander, he enlisted at age 40 in Morganton, NC in Company D, 6th North Carolina Infantry on 18 February 1862.

He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.

The rest of the War

He was listed as present or accounted for through December 1864.
