He enlisted at age 21 in Alamance County, NC in Company E, 6th North Carolina Infantry on 15 June 1861. He was wounded in action at Malvern Hill, VA on 1 July 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded again, in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.

The rest of the War

He was wounded for the third time, at Gettysburg, PA in July 1863 and captured in a hospital there, where he died of his wound on 21 August 1863.
