He enlisted at age 29 in Alamance County, NC in Company E, 6th North Carolina Infantry on 15 June 1861. He mustered in as Sergeant, and was appointed First Sergeant 17 June 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.

The rest of the War

Sent home. Reduced to Private 1 February 1863 due to prolonged absence. Absent, wounded through December 1864.
