A farmer, he enlisted at age 19 in Alamance County, NC in Company E, 6th North Carolina Infantry on 15 June 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.

The rest of the War

He was again wounded, in action at Gettysburg, PA on 2 July 1863 and captured during the retreat at South Mountain, MD on 3 July. He was held at Fort Delaware until paroled and exchanged at City Point, VA on 1 August 1863. He died in McDowell County, NC on 12 February 1864.
