A farmer in Yancey County, he enlisted at age 21 in Charlotte, NC in Company E, 6th North Carolina Infantry on 28 May 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.

The rest of the War

He transferred to Company K, 58th North Carolina Infantry on 31 March 1863, and was present at rank of Sergeant as of April 1863. He was captured in action at Wildcat, KY on 1 August 1863. He had later service in Company B, 5th North Carolina Cavalry and 63rd Regiment NC State Troops.
