A merchant in Alamance County, he enlisted at age 28 in Charlotte, NC in Company F, 6th North Carolina Infantry on 28 May 1861. He mustered in as First Sergeant.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.

The rest of the War

He was elected Junior 2nd Lieutenant to rank from 16 July 1862. He was killed in action at Cold Harbor, VA on 7 June 1864.
