A farmer in Orange County, he enlisted at age 18 in Charlotte, NC in Company F, 6th North Carolina Infantry on 28 May 1861. He was wounded in action at Malvern Hill, VA on 1 July 1862.

On the Campaign

He was captured at Hagerstown, MD on 16 September 1862.

The rest of the War

Exchanged at Aiken's Landing, VA on 10 November 1862. He was mortally wounded in action at Chancellorsville, VA on 4 May 1863 and died of wounds in Richmond, VA on 27 May 1863.
