He enrolled as Captain of Company B, 47th Virginia Infantry on 5 June 1861. He was promoted to Major on 1 May 1862 and transferred to the 22nd Virginia Infantry Battalion.

He commanded the Battalion in Maryland.

The rest of the War

He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and commander of the Battalion on 20 November 1862. He was wounded at Spotsylvania Court House, VA on 10 May 1864 and captured at Sailor's Creek, VA on 6 April 1865.
