Before Sharpsburg
Raised in Loudoun County, Virginia, he had been a teacher and merchant in Norfolk before establishing a military school in 1857 in Henderson, NC. He was appointed Major of the 23rd Infantry on 10 June 1861, and was elected Colonel on 10 May 1862.
On the Campaign
He led the regiment at Fox's Gap on 14 September and at Sharpsburg on 17 September. He was briefly in command of Anderson's North Carolina Brigade on the 18th1.
The rest of the War
He was wounded in action at Gettysburg on 1 July 1863, and died 17 July at Winchester, Virginia.
