Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was a 23 year old lawyer in Clarksville, Habersham County, GA. He was elected and commissioned Major, 24th Georgia Infantry on 24 August 1861 - his father Robert McMillan (1805-1868) was Colonel.
On the Campaign
He was in command of the regiment at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862 after Lieutenant Colonel Sanders took over the brigade. He was severely wounded later that day by a gunshot which broke his right fibula (lower leg bone).
The rest of the War
He was in a Richmond, VA hospital by November and furloughed home on 20 December 1862. His leave was extended and he was in hospital again in June 1863, and he resigned his commission because of his Sharpsburg wound on 19 December 1863 (accepted 8 January 1864).
After the War
In 1870 he was a "retired merchant + executor" in Clarksville, GA and lived with his younger brothers William and Charles.
