Before Sharpsburg

A 26 year old farmer and businessman in Bedford County, he enrolled and was commissioned Captain of Company A of the 2nd Virginia Cavalry on 11 May 1861. He was commissioned Colonel of the 24th Virginia Infantry on 21 September 1861. He was wounded at Williamsburg, VA on 5 May 1862.

On the Campaign

He commanded the regiment in Maryland.

The rest of the War

He was wounded again, at Gettysburg, PA on 3 July 1863. He commanded Kemper's Brigade in the Wilderness in May 1864 and was appointed Brigadier General on 31 May 1864. He was wounded at Dinwiddie Court House, VA on 31 March 1865 but remained with his command and was surrendered at Appomattox Court House, VA on 9 April 1865.

After the War

He was a State Senator for 8 years, superintendent of the state penitentiary, and of the Confederate Soldiers' Home in Richmond.
